Karen ‘Brit’ Chick is another of my favorite YouTubers and Instagrammers.
She’s British (stating the obvious here…her name probably gave that away!) and has an infectious passion for fashion and sharing ideas.
This week, she uploaded the video above.
She asked the question “ARE DESIGNER BAGS RELEASING TOO FAST? CHLOE, GUCCI, PRADA?”. And, she’s started a great discussion.
For example, right now mini bags are in. Like the Fendi Peekaboo mini, above. This bag currently retails for $3200. That’s a sizeable chunk of money to spend on, what may turn out to be, an expensive designer ‘fast fashion’ bag.
Are mini designer bags future classics?
My feeling is that the mini bag craze, with popular YouTubers and Instagrammers, will soon be over. That being the case, this bag won’t hold it’s value in the preloved market. And no, it won’t be a classic bag in the long run.
The rate at which expensive designer bags, from all the different houses, are released makes me think of an automatic tennis ball machine on high speed! Head spinning for sure.
In this recent blog post, I talked about sometimes feeling closet overwhelm. Thinking about designer bag purchases and trying to make a savvy decision also puts me in that head space.
I’ve bought a couple I thought I really wanted…you know that “Instagram made me do it” thing! But returned them, because deep down I had doubts it was money well spent.
When I spend four figures on a bag, it’s only worth it to me if I feel confident it’s classic. That being the case, the cost per wear and resale value will be ok with me.
There’s A Gift In Everything
My personal takeaway, from getting caught up in the designer bag frenzy, was a feeling of clarity.
I feel confident that, in the future, I’ll be sticking with classics (ideally vintage) vs “It” bags. That’ll save me from procastinating and wasting time too!
